StudyChime can send matching Prolific study alerts to Pushover.
To use Pushover alerts, you need two values:
- a user key
- an app token
The user key tells StudyChime which Pushover account should receive the alert. The app token identifies the Pushover application that sends the alert.
The Prolific Pushover notifications overview explains how dedicated push delivery compares with chat-based phone alerts.
Before you start
You will need:
- StudyChime installed
- a Pushover account
- the Pushover app installed on the device where you want notifications
Pushover is a separate service from StudyChime. Pushover may have its own app purchase, account requirements, notification limits, and device settings.
Get your Pushover user key
- Open Pushover and sign in.
- Go to your Pushover dashboard.
- Find your User Key.
- Copy the user key.
Keep this value private. It identifies where Pushover messages should be sent.
Create a Pushover application
StudyChime needs a Pushover app token to send notifications through Pushover.
- Open your Pushover dashboard.
- Find the option to create a new application or API token.
- Create a new application.
- Give it a clear name, such as StudyChime.
- Save the application.
- Copy the application/API token.
Keep the app token private. Anyone with your app token and user key may be able to send Pushover messages to your account.
Add Pushover details to StudyChime
- Open StudyChime from the Chrome toolbar.
- Open Settings.
- Open Alerts.
- Find Pushover.
- Paste your Pushover app token into the App token field.
- Paste your Pushover user key into the User key field.
- Enable Pushover alerts.
- Select Save alert settings.
You can also configure Pushover during Quick start if you select it at the alert chooser. Chrome requests Pushover permission only when you configure or test this destination.
Send a test alert
After saving your Pushover settings:
- Click Send Pushover test in Settings → Alerts.
- Open Pushover on your device.
- Confirm that a StudyChime test message appears.
If the test message appears, Pushover alerts are configured correctly.
What Pushover alerts can include
Pushover alert messages can include study details visible on your Prolific studies page, such as:
- study title
- reward
- hourly rate
- estimated completion time
- places
- study link when available
StudyChime only sends Pushover alerts when Pushover alerts are enabled and a study matches your alert settings.
Keep alert destinations private
Only send StudyChime alerts to private destinations you control.
StudyChime alerts may include study details visible on your own Prolific studies page, such as title, reward, hourly rate, estimated time, places, and links. Do not forward alerts to public communities, shared study feeds, public Discord channels, public Telegram groups, or third-party websites.
StudyChime is designed for private personal alerts, not public sharing or pooling of Prolific study data.
Free and Premium limits
The free version of StudyChime includes 15 external alerts per rolling 24-hour period. Each alert stops counting towards the quota exactly 24 hours after it was sent.
Discord, Telegram, and Pushover alerts all count towards this external alert quota.
Your Pushover app token and user key remain in Chrome extension storage on your device and are sent only to Pushover when StudyChime delivers an alert. Chrome requests Pushover access when you enable this destination and can remove that optional permission when you disable it.
Premium removes the rolling 24-hour external alert limit.
Pushover may also apply its own limits or account rules separately from StudyChime.
If Pushover alerts are not working
Check the following:
- the Pushover app token was copied correctly
- the Pushover user key was copied correctly
- Pushover alerts are enabled in StudyChime
- StudyChime settings were saved
- your Pushover account and device are active
- notifications are allowed on your device
- StudyChime can send a test alert
- you have not reached the 15-alert limit for the current rolling 24-hour period
If the test alert does not arrive, check the app token and user key first. A small copy-and-paste mistake is enough to stop Pushover delivery.
Changing the Pushover destination
To send alerts to a different Pushover account, replace the user key in StudyChime settings.
To use a different Pushover application, replace the app token.
After changing either value, save settings and send another test alert.
Removing Pushover alerts
To stop Pushover alerts:
- Open StudyChime settings.
- Open Alerts.
- Disable Pushover alerts or remove the app token and user key.
- Select Save alert settings.
You can also delete or revoke the Pushover application/API token from your Pushover dashboard if you no longer want it to be usable.
Security note
Treat your Pushover app token and user key like sensitive credentials.
Do not post them publicly, include them in screenshots, or share them with people who should not be able to send Pushover messages to your account.
If your Pushover details are exposed, create a new app token in Pushover and update StudyChime settings.
