Install StudyChime and Complete Quick Start.

Install the StudyChime Chrome extension, choose Prolific browser or phone notifications, and connect your open studies page with Quick Start.

StudyChime monitors the normal Prolific studies page in your browser.

It does not ask for your Prolific password, does not use a private participant API, and does not accept studies on your behalf. You stay signed in to Prolific normally, and StudyChime reads the rendered study list from the page you already have open.

Compare the available Prolific notification methods or review how mobile and phone notifications work before starting Quick Start.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Google Chrome or another Chromium-based browser that supports Chrome extensions
  • A Prolific account
  • Access to the normal Prolific studies page

StudyChime monitors:

https://app.prolific.com/studies

Its required website access is limited to https://app.prolific.com/* and the StudyChime licence service. It does not request Chrome’s broad tabs permission or access arbitrary tabs. Discord, Telegram, and Pushover permissions are optional and are requested only when you configure or test those destinations.

Install StudyChime

  1. Open the StudyChime Chrome Web Store listing.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. Review the Chrome permissions prompt.
  4. Click Add extension.
  5. After installation, click the Chrome extensions icon and pin StudyChime to your toolbar.

Pinning StudyChime is optional, but it makes it easier to open the popup, check status, run a manual check, and open settings.

Why Chrome asks for alarms and scripting

Chrome can occasionally disconnect an extension’s content script from an open page. StudyChime uses:

  • Alarms to wake approximately every five minutes for a local health check of its connection to an already-open Prolific studies page.
  • Scripting to restore StudyChime’s bundled local content script if that health check confirms Chrome has disconnected it.

Recovery is limited to the exact https://app.prolific.com/studies page. It does not refresh, navigate, or modify Prolific. The five-minute check does not send a request to Prolific and does not transmit study information, credentials, or personal data.

The restored script runs in Chrome’s isolated extension environment, so Prolific’s JavaScript cannot directly access its code or variables. No remote code is downloaded or executed.

Complete Quick Start

New installations open Settings on Quick start. This tab remains available only until setup succeeds.

1. Choose alerts

Select any combination of:

  • Browser & sound
  • Discord
  • Telegram
  • Pushover

At least one method is required. Sound is optional and works only with browser notifications; it is not a separate alert method. Select Configure selected alerts to continue.

2. Configure selected alerts

StudyChime walks through only your selected methods, in this order: Browser & sound, Discord, Telegram, then Pushover.

Use Save and continue to move forward. Back or Back to alert choices appears on the left, and Change selection returns to the alert chooser. Returning to the chooser keeps credentials you have already entered. Deselecting a destination disables it without unnecessarily deleting its saved credentials.

External destinations include short instructions, a Need help? Detailed guide ↗ link, and a destination-specific test button.

3. Connect & enable

The final screen is Connect the Prolific studies page:

  1. Select Open Prolific.
  2. Sign in on https://app.prolific.com/studies.
  3. Leave that page open.
  4. Use Check connection if you want to confirm the page is ready.
  5. Select Enable and finish.

Enable and finish enables StudyChime, safely restores its local monitoring script if Chrome has disconnected it, and performs the first study check. It may alert you about studies already visible. Setup completes only after StudyChime reads the page successfully; if the connection or read fails, Quick Start remains incomplete.

This process does not refresh Prolific, click anything, accept studies, reserve places, or call Prolific APIs directly.

How checking works

StudyChime passively observes changes to the open Prolific studies page and reads the visible study list.

It does not automatically refresh the page. When monitoring is enabled, it checks the page content already loaded by Prolific.

Manual Check for studies can still be used whenever you want to run an immediate check.

Use the popup

The compact popup shows monitoring status and the latest Available, Matched, and Alerted counts. Select Check for studies if the connection needs attention or you want an immediate read.

Select Snooze 30m for a short break; the same action is available on browser notifications. While snoozed, the popup uses an amber status and explains that monitoring is still working even though alert delivery is paused. Select Resume alerts to end the snooze early.

Browser notifications and sound

StudyChime can use browser notifications and sound alerts for matching studies.

To use browser notifications:

  1. Open StudyChime Settings.
  2. Open Alerts.
  3. Enable Browser notifications.
  4. Optionally enable Play sound alert.
  5. Allow Chrome notifications if prompted.
  6. Use Send browser test to confirm notifications are working.

Browser notifications can be used with or without sound. Sound cannot be enabled by itself, and turning off browser notifications also turns off and disables sound.

If notifications do not appear, check that Chrome notifications are allowed by your browser and operating system.

Using Prolific filters

You can still use Prolific’s own filters on the studies page.

StudyChime reads what the Prolific page renders, so Prolific-side filtering affects what StudyChime can see.

For example, if Prolific hides certain studies because of a Prolific filter, StudyChime will not alert for those hidden studies.

Staying signed in

If Prolific signs you out, StudyChime cannot read your available studies.

To fix this:

  1. Open the Prolific studies page.
  2. Sign back in.
  3. Wait for the studies page to load normally.
  4. Open StudyChime.
  5. Click Check for studies.

What StudyChime does not do

StudyChime only checks and notifies.

It does not:

  • ask for your Prolific password
  • use a private Prolific participant API
  • bypass Prolific login
  • reserve studies
  • accept studies
  • complete studies
  • submit responses
  • automatically refresh
  • read unrelated websites

You remain in full control of whether to open and take a study.

Next steps

After StudyChime is installed and Prolific monitoring is working, you can set up the alert methods you want to use.
