Overview
StudyChime is a Chrome extension that monitors your own open Prolific studies page and sends matching alerts to destinations you configure.
It is personal and local-first: settings and Trends are not synchronised to a StudyChime account.
It passively observes changes to that page. It does not automatically refresh Prolific, reserve studies, or accept studies.
StudyChime does not sell personal data, show ads, use behavioural tracking or telemetry, build advertising profiles, collect unrelated browsing history, or accept studies on your behalf.
Who to contact
StudyChime is an independent software product. For privacy questions, support requests, or deletion requests related to licence-service data, contact:
Data stored locally
StudyChime stores most extension data locally in Chrome storage on your device.
- Extension settings
- Quick Start completion status
- Discord webhook URLs, Telegram bot tokens and chat IDs, and Pushover app tokens and user keys
- Cached quota status
- Milestone totals and permanent unlocks
- Signed Premium entitlement and licence status
- Filters, schedule windows, and customisation settings
- Local Study Trends observations
Destination credentials remain in Chrome extension storage on your device. They are sent only to the destination selected by you and are not sent to the StudyChime licence service.
From Your data, you can export a user-controlled JSON backup containing profiles, non-sensitive preferences, and Milestone totals and unlocks. The export excludes Discord, Telegram, and Pushover credentials, licence and entitlement data, installation identifiers, browser-notification mappings, and custom sound files. It is a local backup file, not cloud synchronisation.
Importing a settings backup replaces the current profiles and included non-sensitive preferences. It does not merge profiles, and it does not replace credentials or licence details.
Premium Trends observations are stored locally for up to 12 months. Records contain the first-seen time, reward and currency, hourly rate and currency, estimated completion time, places available, and whether the study matched or was notified.
Trends does not retain study titles, researcher names, study descriptions, study URLs, or other unnecessary human-readable study metadata.
Trends imports add valid observations to existing local Trends data and avoid duplicate imported rows by comparing their anonymised values.
The schedule-coverage preview is calculated locally from existing matched-study Trends records. It sends no study or schedule data to StudyChime and creates no new tracking records.
Trend data is not deleted when a licence expires, is removed, or becomes invalid. It remains in the browser but is inaccessible until Premium access returns, unless you clear it yourself or remove the extension.
Milestones use separate totals for newly detected studies that pass the active profile, studies where at least one alert method succeeds, and verified monitoring time. Monitoring time is counted only between checks that confirm monitoring is enabled and a signed-in Prolific studies page is open and responding. It is not general browsing history or computer-usage history. Milestone processing and storage remains local.
You can remove local extension data by clearing the extension data, using any available extension controls to clear trends or settings, or uninstalling StudyChime.
Extension updates retain the locally stored Quick Start completion flag. Uninstalling the extension normally removes it.
Data from your Prolific studies page
StudyChime reads study information visible on your own open Prolific studies page so it can detect matching studies and apply your alert settings.
Required website access is limited to https://app.prolific.com/* and the StudyChime licence service. StudyChime does not request Chrome's broad tabs permission and does not read arbitrary tabs or general browsing history.
This may include study details such as title, reward, hourly rate, estimated time, places, and study links when available.
StudyChime does not ask for your Prolific password, request Chrome cookie permissions, reserve studies, accept studies, complete studies, or submit responses on your behalf.
Monitoring health checks and recovery
When monitoring is enabled, StudyChime uses Chrome's alarms permission to wake approximately every five minutes and perform a local health check. It checks whether StudyChime's connection to an already-open https://app.prolific.com/studies page is still working.
The health check does not refresh or navigate Prolific, make a request to Prolific, inspect another website, or transmit study information, credentials, or personal data.
If Chrome has disconnected StudyChime's monitoring script, the scripting permission allows StudyChime to restore its local script on that exact studies page. The script runs in Chrome's isolated extension environment, does not modify the Prolific page, and cannot have its code or variables directly accessed by Prolific's JavaScript. StudyChime does not download or execute remote code for recovery.
After recovery, normal monitoring resumes and any later alerts are handled as described in this policy.
Data sent to alert providers
If you enable external alerts, StudyChime sends matching alert messages to the providers you configure.
Supported providers include:
- Discord
- Telegram
- Pushover
Alert messages may include study details visible on your Prolific studies page, such as title, reward, hourly rate, estimated time, places, and relevant links when available.
Provider credentials, such as webhook URLs, bot tokens, chat IDs, app tokens, or user keys, remain in Chrome extension storage and are sent only to the provider you select to deliver an alert. Chrome requests the relevant provider's optional website permission only when you configure or test that destination. Unused permission can be removed when you disable it.
Each alert provider processes data according to its own terms and privacy policy.
Help and feedback email drafts
Get support, Request a feature, and Report a bug open your email application with a draft addressed to support@studychime.com. Nothing is sent automatically; you review and send the message yourself.
Support and bug drafts may include the extension version, current monitoring health reason, free/trial/Premium status, and names of enabled alert methods. They do not include alert credentials, licence keys or entitlement tokens, installation identifiers, study details or URLs, Trends data, Milestone counters, or exact activity timestamps.
If you choose to send a draft, its contents are processed through your email provider and received by StudyChime support.
Data sent for licence and trial checks
StudyChime may contact the StudyChime licence service to activate Premium, check licence status, manage free trials, and apply free alert quotas.
Free users can send up to 15 external alerts in any rolling 24-hour period.
The licence service may process:
- Licence key
- Installation ID
- Activation ID
- Extension version
- Premium entitlements
- Free external-alert quota events
- Rate-limit records
- Trial redemption records
Old quota events and expired rate-limit records are automatically deleted during daily cleanup. Other records are retained as described below where needed for licensing, trial protection, refunds, security, and support.
Purchases and payment details
Where Premium checkout is offered, purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy.
StudyChime does not process or store payment card details inside the extension. Payment information is handled by Lemon Squeezy according to its own terms and privacy policy.
Legal basis for processing
StudyChime processes data to provide the extension features requested by the user, including monitoring, alerts, settings, licence checks, trials, quotas, and Premium activation.
Depending on the feature, processing may be based on providing the requested service, legitimate interests such as security and licence management, or the user’s chosen configuration of optional alert providers.
Data not collected
StudyChime does not:
- Ask for your Prolific password
- Request Chrome cookie permissions
- Request Chrome's broad
tabspermission - Read unrelated websites
- Sell user data
- Show ads inside the extension
- Build behavioural advertising profiles
- Collect behavioural telemetry
- Use tracking pixels
- Accept, reserve, complete, or submit studies on your behalf
- Store a central StudyChime analytics database of your local study trends
- Create a study-level activity log, accepted-study history, earnings tracker, or delivery timeline
- Send local Milestone progress or schedule-coverage calculations to StudyChime
Retention
Local extension data remains in Chrome storage on your device until you clear it, remove the extension, or use extension controls that delete local trends or settings.
When Premium Trends are available, its history is retained for up to 12 months and older records are removed.
Milestone totals and unlocks do not use the one-year Trends retention period. They remain locally until you clear extension data or uninstall StudyChime. Clearing Trends alone does not remove them. A non-sensitive JSON backup can preserve them before local data is removed.
Licensing, activation, order, and trial-redemption records are kept for as long as needed to provide Premium, prevent duplicate trials, handle refunds and support, and protect the service. Old rolling-quota events and expired rate-limit records are deleted automatically each day.
Data sent to Discord, Telegram, Pushover, Lemon Squeezy, or any other configured provider is retained according to that provider’s own account settings, terms, and privacy policy.
