Prolific Pushover notifications

Turn matching Prolific studies into focused Pushover alerts.

StudyChime can send matching study alerts to Pushover, a dedicated push-notification service for phones, tablets, and desktops.

Pushover is useful when you want Prolific phone notifications kept separate from chat apps. StudyChime needs your Pushover user key and an application token you create for the destination.

How it works

Two keys connect StudyChime to your devices.

Your Pushover user key identifies your account. The application token identifies the application you create for StudyChime alerts. Both are required for Pushover to accept a message.

When a visible study matches, Chrome sends the alert to Pushover, which delivers it according to your account and device settings. Your open Prolific page remains the source of the alert.

What you need

  • A Pushover account with the app installed on your device
  • Your Pushover user key
  • An application or API token created for StudyChime alerts
  • StudyChime active beside your open Prolific studies page

Setup

Add the Pushover user key and app token.

Copy each value from the correct part of Pushover, save it in StudyChime, and confirm delivery before waiting for a live match.

  1. Prepare Pushover

Create or sign in to your Pushover account, install the app on the phone or device you want to notify, and confirm that the device appears in your account.

  2. Copy your user key

Find the user key on your Pushover account page. This identifies the account that should receive StudyChime messages.

  3. Create an application token

Register an application for your StudyChime alerts and copy its API token. The application token is different from your user key; StudyChime needs both.

  4. Connect and test

Enable Pushover in StudyChime Settings, enter both values, and send a test alert. Confirm the correct device receives a visible and audible notification.

Practical details

Keep dedicated push alerts dependable.

Correct credentials prove Pushover can accept a message; device settings decide how prominently it appears.

User key versus app token

The user key belongs to the recipient account, while the application token belongs to the sending application. Swapping them or copying only one will cause the test to fail.

Device settings

Review the Pushover app's notification permission, sounds, quiet hours, and device registration if a test appears in the message list without the alert you expected.

Credential privacy

Keep both values private and avoid including them in screenshots. If an application token is exposed, replace it in Pushover and update the saved value in StudyChime.

Changing devices

Pushover delivery follows the devices and rules on your Pushover account. After adding or removing a device, send a new StudyChime test to confirm the result.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between a Pushover user key and app token?

The user key identifies the receiving Pushover account. The application token identifies the application sending the message. StudyChime needs both values.

Do I need the Pushover app on my phone?

Yes, if you want phone notifications. Install Pushover, sign in to the account linked to your user key, and confirm the device is registered.

Why does the Pushover test fail?

Check for missing characters or spaces in both credentials, confirm the application token is still active, and make sure Chrome granted the optional Pushover permission when requested.

Why is a Pushover message silent?

Check phone notification permission, Pushover sounds, quiet hours, Focus or Do Not Disturb, and device-specific settings. Delivery can succeed while the operating system silences the alert.

How do I remove Pushover alerts?

Disable Pushover in StudyChime Settings and remove the saved user key and application token. You can also delete the Pushover application token if it is no longer needed.
